“And when two such people encounter each other, and their eyes meet, the past and the future become unimportant. There is only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only. It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world. Without such love, one’s dreams would have no meaning.”
~ Paulo Coelho
What Prompted This Article
I asked a question that led me down a very interesting and unexpected road a few days ago.
I asked a friend whether she believed her partner was her soulmate. She gave me an interesting answer and inspired me to do a little research. (I am an Aquarian!)
I began what I thought would be a few minutes spent on Google producing icky Hallmark-style definitions and “How to Find Your Soulmate” articles, but became happily enthralled in some very interesting articles referencing powerful works from Plato, Carl Jung and Edgar Cayce on the subject of our one, true soulmate.
The concept has far more depth, profound mystery and exquisite spiritual importance than I had realized.
It led me down an intense, “rabbit hole” of a journey into spirituality, mysticism, karmic ramification and past lives.
A Soul Divided – One Possible Reference
During Plato’s Symposium, Aristophanes tells of an angry Zeus who decides to weaken mankind by cutting them in half.
This separation created a universal hunger among mankind to unite with their other divided soul. According to Aristophanes, this explains our desperate and powerful need to find our “other half”.
The belief is that this missing half is incarnated into another human form – our soulmate.
This desire to search for the other half of our severed soul is an ancient force.
“And when one of them meets with his other half … the pair are lost in amazement of love and friendship and intimacy, and would not be out of the other’s sight. These are the people who pass their whole lives together; yet could not explain what they desire in one another.”
-Plato, 360 B.C.E.
What is a Soul Mate … Really?
I came across an article that stated there is a divine element in soulmate partnerships. (divine means something that is truly magnificent, or “of God” – it’s a good word :))
A soulmate union goes far beyond a beautiful friendship, a life partnership or relationship with someone you believe you cannot live without.
A soulmate is not merely someone who makes your life blissful.
They are not just a romantic partner.
They are so much more and play a very important role.
A soulmate will powerfully accelerate your spiritual learning. Your soulmate is here to assist you in your soul’s most meaningful development.
Your soulmate will inspire you to live to your fullest, richest (spiritually), and most beautiful potential.
Your soulmate will show you pure, intense, incredible unconditional love – and help you cultivate that for yourself. Your soulmate will make you feel entirely whole.
They help us develop our truest self. The real us. We can be completely, honestly ourselves.
They will bring you back home.
“There is a blind spot on the retina of the human eye, and there is also in the soul a blind side where you are not able to see. Therefore you must depend on the one to see for you what you cannot see yourself.”
-John O’Donohue, Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom
A Search That Spans Lifetimes
Theories regarding soulmates involve the belief that these two souls have shared multiple lifetimes together. These souls search tirelessly for eachother throughout their many, many experiences on Earth.
When they meet again there is an instant recognition.
A profound knowing that they have shared lifetimes together.
There may not always be conscious memories attached to this feeling. However, many people experience flashbacks or that unmistakable deja vu sensation.
A feeling that they have had the same experience in a different setting, a long, long time ago.
Many people believe that when eye contact is first made the souls reacquaint.
Hence the phrases “eyes are the windows to the soul” or “love at first sight”.
They will usually powerfully and instantly understand that this person will play a significant role in this life.
Edgar Cayce believed that soulmates often come together to work on important projects together.
Projects of masterpiece proportion.
Our soulmate will likely collaborate with us in a project that services mankind in some way.
A creative miracle can occur.
The souls made a sacred contract with eachother long, long ago.
They pledged to come together again and create something exquisite for the benefit of others. Through this creation their own soul’s evolution continues. A powerful contribution that intensifies their already deep, magnetic connection.
“Soulmates” and “Soul Friends”
Caroline Myss has an exceptional book called Sacred Contracts. I am reading it now and it is incredible. She believes that we have “contracts” with many people in our lives on a soul level. Not all are our “soulmates”, but are our “soul friends”.
“Imagine that upon incarnation, each soul splits into countless fragments that move instantly into the exploration of the global soul.”
She believes that these fragments are put into people that you are not simply destined to meet, but are required to meet. These meetings must happen because you have signed a spiritual contract with them in a past life and they are imperative to this life.
These are our “Soul Friends”.
“There are no insignificant relationships. Every experience that we have contains purpose and meaning. Each event, each person in our lives embodies an energetic fragment of our own psyche and soul.
Our individual spiritual task is to recognize and integrate all of them into our awareness so that the greater pattern of our mission can shine forth.”
I have found my reading on soul relationships to be a beautiful exploration.
I am happily single and have no fear, sadness or worry that I will have a fruitless search for my soulmate in this lifetime.
I am enjoying my journey!
“We meet our soulmates when we’re on our soul path.”
